I recently discovered the best gift to give a teenager, and best of all it could save their life. It’s called the Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School, for permit and licensed drivers ages 15 – 21. This is not your typical drivers education course that focuses on classroom learning and simple on-the-road driving and maneuvers. In this program, students will learn how to safely control their vehicle in emergency situations.

The “Street Survival” program improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations. Using their own vehicle so that the skills they learn can be directly translated to their own daily driving experiences, students will learn:

  • how their actions govern the vehicle’s responses

  • what are the handling limits of their vehicle and how to control them

  • how to look far enough ahead to anticipate the actions of other drivers and avoid accidents entirely

  • how to master the application of physics when driving

Most drivers never get the chance to learn what to do if their car slides sideways or if they need to make a last-minute evasive maneuver to avoid an accident until they absolutely need to. Qualified coaches are in the vehicle with the student throughout the entire day. Challenging driving courses are created in a controlled area to allow the student to experience abnormal vehicle behavior and then teach him/her how to handle the new situation. The course is wet down (in part) to allow the student to experience "mistakes" at a very slow speed. In this class, mistakes are learning experiences. The objective is safer, more effective drivers on the road.
