Improving Safety in Work Zones

Imagine your workplace had traffic ripping by at speeds of 75 mph or more on one side of your desk and giant construction machinery capable of crushing you on the other side. This is what many construction workers experience on-the-job everyday.

Highway construction workers put their lives at risk on a daily basis for the safety of others. Despite all the equipment and other hazardous conditions in an active work zone, traffic remains the most dangerous. Many drivers do not consider that during any construction process workers are virtually helpless against a speeding, out-of-control vehicle. They tend to ignore warning signs; even when they do pay attention speeding and driver inattention/distractions are the major causes of road construction accidents.

Drivers are not immune to construction site dangers. Accidents are commonly caused by drivers creating sudden stops, taking their eyes off the road to look at active construction, and ignoring construction zone speed limits. Also, as construction venues constantly change, drivers rely on memory rather than attentiveness to the changes.

Although construction companies can reduce the risk of injury or death by providing proper safety training to its workers, there needs to be increased public awareness. Drivers should

· slow down when entering all construction sites, regardless whether there is or is not sign posted. Whether signs are posted or not, speed in construction sites on highways should be reduced to 45mph; these changes in speed apply whether work is occurring or not.

· allow adequate stopping distance and avoid passing on the shoulder.

· stay alert and avoid distractions.

Additionally, tractor-trailer drivers need to be aware of their immense length and weight and the requirements for a much wider turn, lane changes, and endure longer starting and stopping times.

Remember, following safety precautions and following the laws of the roads reduces the risks of heavy fines, tickets, injuries, and death.
