IKEA, Health Canada, and the CPSC issued a voluntary recall of RUND clear glass mugs. These mugs have a double wall and IKEA says the inner wall can break during use, posing a laceration threat.

The recall was initiated after a consumer reported a serious laceration which needed immediate medical attention. Eleven similar incidents have been reported outside the U.S. The recall affected approximately 13,000 mugs in the US and another 115,000 globally. These mugs were handmade and sold in IKEA stores between October 2009 and March 2010. Consumers may return the glasses for a full refund.

Although this recall has been announced, like all products if a user is unaware of the danger of use and sustains serious injuries, the maker and distributor should be liable for damages. With so many recalls – some more critical than others – recalls like this may go unnoticed by consumers until it is too late. The best thing a consumer can do is visit www.recalls.gov, a one-stop website for consumers that covers nearly all federal agencies that conduct product recalls. Many recalls involve only certain lot numbers or batches of a product. Check the lot numbers or dates listed to see if the item you are using is actually affected.

If a product is recalled, stop using it, and either return it to the place where it was purchased or dispose of it. Read the recall notices thoroughly for instructions. For additional safety, concerned consumers can sign up to receive press releases and recalls from the US. CPCSC website.
