Taylor Sauer was texting every 90 seconds during her four-hour commute home from college when she slammed into a tanker truck at 80 mph. Her last text before the fatal accident was “Driving and Facebooking is not safe! Haha.”

Six months ago, a young man driving home from college was texting with a friend. Moments after he sent a text saying, “I need to quit texting because I could die in a car accident”, his truck plunged off a bridge and landed in a ravine. Surprisingly, Chance lived to tell his story, but it has not been easy. He sustained a fractured skull and traumatic brain injuries, broke his neck, and suffered a crushed face.

He spent six months in intensive care. Chance had to learn how to speak and walk again. He has not fully recovered, but is able to convey a powerful message to all drivers.

“Don’t do it. It’s not worth losing your life,” he said. I went to my grandmother’s funeral not long ago. And I kept thinking; it kept jumping into my head: I’m surprised that’s not me in that casket.’ I came very close to that. To being gone forever.” I know I died like three times, but God didn’t keep me away from coming back here. I have a higher purpose in being here. And I think it’s to tell everyone not to text message and drive.”

These are just two examples of drivers who knew and understand the dangers, yet still engaged in texting while driving. No matter how much media attention is given to texting and driving, it still remains a serious problem in the U.S. Increasing awareness is an ongoing process if we are going to make a change; if we are going to increase safety on our roadways. Laws help, but they are not enough. Drivers need to take responsibility; they need to use common sense.

Do you text and drive? If so, what compels you to be constantly connected? Is it worth losing your life?
