A Distracted Drivers Message may not have been received, but will mine?

Comments Off

The road is narrow and winding with no shoulder. There are no warning signs and the road is not well-lit at night. If that is not dangerous enough, add a driver distracted by texting. Moments before a fatal single vehicle accident may have gone something like this:

Incoming text: “What’s up?”

Driver: “Not much?”

Incoming text: “Wanna meet up?”

Driver: “When?”

Incoming text: “20 minutes?”

Driver: “Sure. On my way. I’ll

Although the actual text messages are hypothetical, the outcome is not. On the evening of June 12, 2012, a 23-year-old Arkansas man was in the middle of typing a text message while driving when he crossed the center line and hit a tree. He died at the scene.

While cell phones have certainly become a reality of everyday life, they are not meant to be used while behind the wheel. Texting while driving is deadly; taking your eyes off the road for any reason is dangerous.

Common sense says don't text and drive, so why do people do it? What are people thinking when they engage in this activity? What can be so urgent that you want to risk your life or the life of ours? How many deaths will it take before you stop – your own? Don’t post your final words while behind the wheel; "X the TXT"!
